With nano-micro nozzles or micro- atomizers small liquid amounts (smaller 500 ml/h) are disintegrated at low atomizing pressures (smaller 1.2 bar) to produce small droplets in the nano-micro range. A common problem is the reproducible production of these nozzles as described under "Design and Manufacturing of nano-micro nozzles".
The liquid to be sprayed is disintegrated into fine droplets by the atomizing gas that emerges from the nozzle at the annular gap. Depending on the nozzle design, the atomizing fluid is mixed outside (outer mixing) or inside (inner mixing) of the nozzle. Air-atomizing spray nozzles are also referred to as twin-fluid, two-fluid, multiple fluid, pneumatic, and air-assisted spray nozzles or atomizers.
